The USS Independence (CV-62) was an aircraft carrier in the United States Navy that was commissioned in January 1959. The ship was named after the Declaration of Independence and participated in many major operations over its long career, including the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and Operation Enduring Freedom.
The crew of the USS Independence consisted of approximately 2,800 personnel, including officers and enlisted sailors. The crew list was composed of individuals from a variety of backgrounds and specialties, including pilots, mechanics, technicians, and support personnel. The ship had a reputation for being a well-run and efficient vessel, and its crew was known for their dedication and hard work.
Throughout its career, the USS Independence received many awards and commendations for its service to the United States. The ship was decommissioned in September 1998, after nearly 40 years of service, and was eventually sunk as a target during a training exercise in the Pacific Ocean in 2017. Though the ship is no longer in service, many former crew members continue to stay in touch and remain proud of their time on board the USS Independence.
